From most Cape Coral villas, RSW is a straightforward 20 to 25 minute drive. The airport offers direct connections from many major US cities including New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Boston, and Philadelphia. For international travelers, there are also seasonal direct flights from select European cities, particularly during the winter months.
A second option worth knowing about is Punta Gorda Airport, code PGD, located about 40 minutes southeast of Cape Coral. It is served primarily by Allegiant Air and offers surprisingly affordable connections from a number of US cities. Worth checking if you are flexible on timing.
For travelers coming from Europe, Miami International Airport and Orlando International Airport are both viable alternatives with significantly more international connections. From Miami, Cape Coral is roughly a two and a half hour drive north. From Orlando, plan for about two hours heading southwest on I-75.
Getting Around
Cape Coral is a car city, plain and simple. The city covers nearly 120 square miles and was designed around the car from the very beginning. Public transportation exists but is limited, and rideshare options like Uber and Lyft are available though response times can vary depending on the time of day and your location.
A rental car is by far the most practical choice and gives you the freedom to explore on your own terms. Most major rental companies have desks directly at RSW, and booking in advance, especially during peak season, is strongly recommended.
If you are renting a villa with Gulf access and a boat dock, do not overlook the option of exploring by water. Cape Coral's canal network connects to the Caloosahatchee River and ultimately to the Gulf of Mexico, opening up a completely different way of getting around and discovering the region.

Florida uses a toll road system on many of its highways and expressways. If your rental car comes equipped with a SunPass transponder, you are all set. If not, most toll roads also accept cash or offer pay-by-plate options. Just be sure to check with your rental company about their toll policy to avoid unexpected fees on your bill.
