Beyond Cape Coral: Day Trips Worth Taking
One of the great advantages of staying in Cape Coral is the location. Within an hour or two in any direction, you will find some of the most beautiful and diverse destinations in all of Florida. Whether you prefer white sand beaches, charming island towns, upscale dining, or old Florida fishing culture, it is all within easy reach.
Sanibel Island and Captiva Island
About 45 minutes by car, Sanibel Island is one of the most beloved destinations on the entire Gulf Coast. It is famous worldwide for its extraordinary shelling beaches, particularly Bowman's Beach and Blind Pass Beach, where the unusual east-west orientation of the island causes shells to wash ashore in remarkable quantities. Sanibel is also home to the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge, a stunning 6,400 acre sanctuary where you can spot roseate spoonbills, osprey, alligators, and dozens of other species from a scenic wildlife drive or kayak trail.
Just across the bridge from Sanibel lies Captiva Island, smaller and even more laid-back, with a handful of excellent waterfront restaurants and one of the best sunset views on the Gulf Coast. Twilight at the 'Tween Waters Island Resort or a drink at the Mucky Duck are experiences that stay with you.

Fort Myers Beach
Fort Myers Beach is about 30 minutes from Cape Coral and offers a lively, classic Florida beach town atmosphere. Estero Boulevard runs the length of the island and is lined with beach bars, seafood restaurants, souvenir shops, and direct Gulf access. Times Square at the northern tip of the island is the social hub, especially at sunset.
Fort Myers Beach has been rebuilding and reinventing itself following Hurricane Ian in 2022 and has emerged with a fresh energy alongside its enduring charm. Many restaurants and attractions have reopened, and new additions are making it worth visiting more than ever.
Naples
About an hour south of Cape Coral, Naples is the upscale jewel of Southwest Florida. Fifth Avenue South is one of the most elegant shopping and dining streets in the state, lined with galleries, boutiques, and restaurants that can hold their own against anything you would find in Miami or New York. The Naples Pier at sunset is an absolute must, and the beach here is some of the finest white sand you will find anywhere in Florida.
If you enjoy golf, Naples is also known as one of the top golf destinations in the entire country, with dozens of world-class courses in and around the city.
Everglades City and the Ten Thousand Islands
For nature lovers and adventure seekers, a trip southeast to Everglades City opens up one of the most unique ecosystems on earth. The Ten Thousand Islands offer extraordinary kayaking, fishing, and airboat tours through mangrove tunnels and open water. This is wild, untouched Florida at its most spectacular and genuinely unlike anywhere else in the world.
Everglades City is about an hour and 20 minutes from Cape Coral, making it a full day excursion but absolutely worth it.
By Boat: Cabbage Key and Pine Island
For those staying in a Gulf access villa with a boat, the day trip options expand dramatically. Cabbage Key is a legendary island destination accessible only by water, home to a historic inn and restaurant where the walls are covered floor to ceiling in signed dollar bills, a tradition that has been going on since the 1940s. The cheeseburger here has its own mythology, and the whole experience is pure old Florida magic.
Pine Island, just a short boat ride away, offers a completely different pace. This is one of the few barrier islands in Florida that has resisted large-scale development, and it shows. Local art galleries, waterfront fish markets, and a handful of no-frills seafood restaurants serving the catch of the day make it a genuine escape from anything overly touristy.
Tampa and Orlando
For those who want to venture further, Tampa is about two hours north and offers a vibrant food and culture scene, the historic Ybor City neighborhood, and Busch Gardens for families with children. Orlando, about two hours northeast, needs little introduction. Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, SeaWorld, and LEGOLAND are all within easy reach for a full day trip, though an overnight stay lets you make the most of the parks without the rush.
